This book follows Lillian, a twenty-something year old woman, determined to do everything she can to get her boyfriend Henry to fully commit to her. That is, until Henry unexpectedly breaks up with her. Furious, she finds a hex from an internet witch to seek revenge. Except instead of making Henry come back to her, he ends up murdered instead. And Lillian just became a suspect.
I was dragging my feet on reading this one. And then, I read this book in a single day. No joke.
I was a bit put-off by the beginning and almost put it down, but once I pushed past the first few chapters, I was completely hooked.
This is a book about an unlikable character and it’s written to perfection. I could not stand Lillian. She’s an awful, self-centered (and rather unhinged) woman and I loved every second I was stuck in her head. She’s one of those main characters that you’ll love to hate-read because she’s so horrible and yet, she keeps digging a bigger hole for herself precisely because of her personality.
The plot of this book is also fantastic and I can honestly say there was not a single moment I felt bored reading this story. The way Lillian handles the fallout from her breakup had me flipping the pages so fast because you just know she’s making all the stupid decisions because she just can’t help herself. That in itself made the book so much fun to read.
I also love how the characters around her really highlight exactly how unhinged Lillian is. While there were some other characters I really enjoyed too, there were some that fell flat (or where I was expecting a little more from, if that makes sense?) but overall the main character completely steals the spotlight throughout this whole book.
Listen, I’m being intentionally vague. Go into this book as blind as possible because it’s a wild ride if you do. If you love unlikeable main characters (or maybe have never read a book about one before), definitely pick this one up.
