I have adored this series from book one and knowing that a new novel comes out about once a year is something I greatly look forward to. My love for the Wayward Children’s series continues on with this lovely novel.
This book follows Nadya, a Russian orphan adopted into an American family. Nadya has a birth defect where one of her arms stops at the elbow. This has never held her back and she is dismayed when one day her parents force upon her a prosthetic limb in order for her to appear more “whole”. She copes by visiting a small pond near her home to watch the turtles. But one day, she see’s a turtle with the words “Be Sure” engraved in Russian in its shell. Dismayed, she attempts to rescue the turtle, only to find herself whisked away into another world.
Words cannot describe how much I adore these books. The unique world building that Seanan McGuire develops in each of her books is incredible and this one is perhaps one of my favorites of the series.
I loved Nadya from the get-go. McGuire has such a way with characters and somehow always manages to write them in way where I feel immediately drawn to them. Similarly, these books always have fantastic world-building and atmosphere and I particularly enjoyed the drowned world that Nadya finds herself in with this story.
For some people, these books get really formulaic but in the case of this particular book series, I find the predictability very comforting and familiar. I also appreciate that you can pretty much start anywhere in the series but I do definitely recommend starting from the beginning.
As always, if you are looking for a beautifully written novella with fantastic characters and gorgeous world building, please look into the Wayward Children series.
