When it comes to reading, I cut my teeth on Goosebumps books. In fact, I’ve got many of the original books sitting upstairs in my child’s bookshelf right now. I can safely attribute my love of R.L. Stine’s books to being a pretty big contributing factor for my love of Horror in my adult reading years.
So, it should come as no surprise that when I saw R.L. Stine released a new book, I immediately borrowed it from the library (sorry kids!).
This book follows siblings Joe and Sadie, who have just moved into their new home on Nightmare Street. While the rest of his family quickly take to the new home, Joe is put off. Something is wrong and he can’t quite put his finger on it.
This book is R.L. Stine’s love letter to his past works. It’s the ultimate mash up of many elements and tropes in the Goosebumps and Fear Street books that made them so popular. Needless to say, I had an absolute blast seeing so many easter eggs in one novel.
The book is so predictably Stine (and I truly mean this in happy, nostalgic way) - short chapters, juvenile characters and a plethora of cliffhangers. It felt so 90s reading this book that I immediately felt like a kid again (except this time I didn’t need a flashlight to secretly read past my bedtime!).
While I’m sure there are many kids in the newer generations enjoying Goosebumps just as much as I did as a kid, this book really felt like a tribute to those that grew up with the books.
If you’ve never read a book by R.L Stine before, I’d recommend holding off on this one. Start with his earlier works and then this book will make so much more sense. If you grew up with Goosebumps and Fear Street, please pick this one up. It’s such a giant dose of reading nostalgia!
