Thank you to NetGalley and FlatIron Books for a copy of this ARC! Despite some small grievances, this book helped pull me out of a 6 month reading slump (and that’s a huge win, in my opinion)!

So, funny story. I had requested this ARC a while back because I was really intrigued by the premise (podcast disappearance mystery?!). Then, my reading slump hit and for whatever reason, I’d forgotten all about this book UNTIL I came across it at my local library, borrowed it, and immediately devoured it in hours. And now here I sit, months later, kicking myself that I waited so long to pick this one up!

This book follows Benny and Joy, two besties that launched a massively successful podcast centered around crazy survival stories. Everything is going great, until one morning when Benny discovers a shattered window, an empty house, and Joy and her husband missing. Suddenly Benny is thrust into the middle of his own survival story, and desperate to find his missing best friend.

I really enjoyed the premise of this novel! The main characters and their relationship immediately captured my attention and I loved the way this book was paced. The chapters bounce back and forth between present day (with the disappearance) and Benny and Joy’s friendship history. It reminded me a lot of Gone Girl, and by that I mean it was a clever way to get to know the characters even though one was missing.

I found the mystery aspect of the novel suspenseful enough to keep my attention, though I really wish we would have gotten more of their podcast - I thought the topics they discussed were really interesting and I wanted more “episodes” in the book! I also found this book hard to predict, there were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing until the final pages (which I always appreciate!).

Taking care not to spoil the ending, there were some things that didn’t make sense to me. I know they had to happen for the book to play out the way that it did but I felt a little frustrated by some of the decision-making in this book. That said, I did like the ending and felt my grievances didn’t take too much away from my overall enjoyment of the book.

I think this book will be perfect for mystery lovers that enjoy a unique premise with interesting main characters. I definitely recommend picking this one up!
